Maja Zimmerlin is a choreographer, award-winning dance filmmaker, and performer redefining movement on screen and in site-specific spaces. Trained at the Zürcher Tanz Theater Schule (ZTTS) in Zürich and the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, she has created internationally performed stage works and specializes in dance films that have been showcased and awarded at renowned festivals.
Her latest project, CELLULA, merges movement and architecture in a mobile theater—an immersive space where time slows, breath deepens, and the audience connects with the pulse of life. This interdisciplinary approach is a hallmark of her work, where choreography, film, and live performance meet to create transformative experiences.
As a performer, she has been part of Isabelle Schad’s ensemble since 2022 (The Shift of Focus, HAU1 / Studies On Infinity # 1 / #2) and contributes to various improvisational music collaborations. In 2024, she performed for Thresholds, Yael Bartana’s installation at the German Pavilion of the Venice Biennale. She is also engaged in Nachts Wird mir Wetter, a collaboration with Kammerphilharmonie Graubünden, composer Alfred Zimmerlin, and writer Andreas Neser.
Maja’s artistic vision is deeply rooted in tradition, yet relentlessly innovative. Drawing from her expertise in Tai Chi, Zen Shiatsu, and Pranic Healing, she explores the rhythm of birth and breath, crafting choreography that reconnects audiences with the essence of movement and time.
A mother of three, she actively advocates for family-friendly conditions in the performing arts. Her research and activism focus on integrating motherhood and artistic practice, ensuring that artists do not create despite motherhood, but throughit. She shares her expertise in masterclasses and coaching programs, mentoring dance filmmakers and supporting mother-artists navigating their careers.
Her work continues to carve new artistic pathways, bridging movement, film, and live performance into powerful, immersive experiences that resonate across disciplines and audiences.
